29 Whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.
29 I found that the accusation had to do with questions about their law, but there was no charge against him that deserved death or imprisonment.
29 I found that he was being accused about questions of their law, but charged with nothing deserving death or imprisonment.
29 It turned out to be a squabble turned vicious over some of their religious differences, but nothing remotely criminal.
29 I found out that he was accused concerning questions of their law, but had nothing charged against him deserving of death or chains.
29 I soon discovered the charge was something regarding their religious law-certainly nothing worthy of imprisonment or death.
Matthew Henry's Commentary on Acts 23:29
Commentary on Acts 23:25-35
(Read Acts 23:25-35)
God has instruments for every work. The natural abilities and moral virtues of the heathens often have been employed to protect his persecuted servants. Even the men of the world can discern between the conscientious conduct of upright believers, and the zeal of false professors, though they disregard or understand not their doctrinal principles. All hearts are in God's hand, and those are blessed who put their trust in him, and commit their ways unto him.
