Immigrants in the United States face tremendous challenges. Those who arrived through legal pathways must establish new lives in unfamiliar communities that are too often unwelcoming. Many who entered the country illegally are being deported, often resulting in heartbreaking separations from family and friends. Immigrants who are refugees have fled dangerous conditions in their home countries and hope to find safety and stability in the United States. Everyone who immigrates here – no matter what their circumstances are – hopes to find better lives in the United States, even as they deal with discrimination. The burdens of uncertainty, fear, and hardships can be overwhelming for immigrants.
The Bible reminds us in Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” It also points out in Deuteronomy 10:18 that God “…loves the foreigner residing among you…”. No matter how we feel about U.S. immigration policies, it’s important to have compassion for the immigrants themselves as God does – and to pray that they will experience the comfort of God’s help in their lives.
Here are 7 prayers of comfort for immigrants in the United States.

1. A Prayer for Protection
Dear God, please protect all immigrants – members of your worldwide family who are all valuable souls you have made in your image. Strengthen them when they experience fear, fight anxiety for them, and surround them with compassionate people who can help meet their needs. Keep them safe when they’re traveling in dangerous conditions or facing threats of violence and exploitation. Guard immigrants from harm and give them safe passage to places where they can live the peaceful lives you want all your people to experience. May they be encouraged by your promise in Psalm 121:8: “The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”
God, we also pray for those who have already arrived in the United States but remain vulnerable. Many live in fear of deportation, poverty, or exploitation. Please give them trustworthy advocates, safe places to stay, and the discernment they need to perceive your guidance for the decisions they must make in all areas of their lives. Let them feel your powerful peace and take refuge in your promises, such as your promise in Isaiah 41:13: “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Do not fear; I will help you.’” Thank you, God. Amen.

2. A Prayer for Families Separated By Immigration Policies
Dear God, we grieve for families torn apart due deportations, even if we believe that those who have arrived illegally should leave the United States. It’s heartbreaking when families are separated, under any conditions. Comfort parents who have been separated from their children, and give peace of mind to those who are waiting in uncertainty. Give them the hope of finding a legal pathway to return to their families one day, and the emotional strength to endure the time when they must be separated. Sustain them through your great love, and inspire people in their communities to rally around them with tangible support. Remind separated immigrant families of your promise from Isaiah 41:10: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Please guide the people who are working to reunite families, from legal advocates to humanitarian organizations. Open doors for compassionate policies that focus on family unity and well-being. Strengthen the bonds of loving unity among separated family members, so they can feel connected to you and each other even across great distances. May they look to you for the healing they need, as Psalm 147:3 says about you: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Thank you, God. Amen.

3. A Prayer for Refugees Seeking Safety
Dear God, please help refugees who are fleeing war, persecution, and other dangers in search of safety. Many have lost everything, and they’re exhausted and discouraged. Give them everything they need – shelter, resources, opportunities to work, etc. Help people in communities around our nation to open their hearts to those in desperate need, like refugees. Inspire and motivate American citizens who know refugees to treat them with kindness and do what they can to give refugees practical help. Let refugees know that they are seen and valued as people you have created and people you love. Encourage refugees to follow your call in Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
God, as refugees deal with uncertainty, give them the endurance they will need for each step ahead. Ease their trauma and remind them that their identity is not defined by their displacement but by your love for them. Bring them into places where they are welcomed, not feared, and where they are encouraged to contribute, not cast aside. Please strengthen their faith in the middle of their challenges. Let them find encouragement in Isaiah 58:10: “If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.” Thank you, God. Amen.

4. A Prayer for Fair and Compassionate Treatment
Dear God, we pray for just and compassionate treatment for immigrants to our nation. Thank you for being a caring Heavenly Father to all people. Guide U.S. leaders to create legal policies that reflect your love for humanity – policies that respect people and inspire humane solutions to immigration problems. Please give wisdom and courage to those who are working for positive change within the U.S. immigration system. Motivate them to be both just and compassionate. Help them see the human faces behind immigration policies and uphold the dignity of each immigrant.
Encourage everyone who deals with U.S. immigration to follow your advice in Micah 6:8 “…what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Your Word also says, in Hebrews 13:2: “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers…”. Thank you for the communities welcoming strangers with open arms and helping immigrants with their basic needs. Bless their generosity and inspire others to build relationships with immigrants based on shared humanity and mutual respect. Thank you, God. Amen.

5. A Prayer for Immigrants Facing Discrimination and Fear
Dear God, many immigrants endure prejudice, hostility, and fear. Please give them courage and perseverance. Help them not to be discouraged when people are unkind to them, but instead to be encouraged when people share your unconditional love with them. Empower them to follow your advice in Romans 12:12: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” Help us to be among those who speak out against evil like injustice and racism. Show us how we can advocate for immigrants who are being mistreated.
Open the hearts of those who are prejudiced against immigrants simply because they’re immigrants. Show they the humanity and dignity in every person, regardless of where they come from. Let kindness and understanding replace fear and division. May communities work together to create environments where all people – regardless of nationality or background – feel valued and safe. Remind us of your command in Leviticus 19:34: “The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.” Thank you, God. Amen.

6. A Prayer for Immigrants Seeking Legal Status
Dear God, we pray for immigrants who are trying to deal with the complex U.S. legal system as they seek documentation and citizenship. Please open doors and provide resources for them to start stable new lives here in the United States, where they can become fully participating and contributing citizens of our nation. Let their legal processes be accessible and fair. Give them patience and hope while they wait to learn what their future holds. Remind them of your promise in Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
God, we also pray for those who are discouraged by legal setbacks, delays, and uncertainty. Give them perseverance as they face obstacles, and surround them with knowledgeable advisors and compassionate advocates. While they wait, reassure them that you are working on their behalf. Encourage them with your promise in Psalm 37:5: “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this.” Give them strength to continue their journey. Thank you, God. Amen.

7. A Prayer for Those Detained or Facing Deportation
Dear God, please help immigrants who are currently detained or facing deportation. In their loneliness and fear, be their source of hope and peace. Let them notice your constant presence with them. Give them legal help, advocates, and encouragement. Let them know they are not forgotten. Please comfort them with the truth that Psalm 9:9 describes: “The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.”
God, we also pray for the families and loved ones of those who are detained, since they go through deep anxiety and heartbreak. Strengthen them as they deal with uncertainty, and surround them with a supportive community to walk with them through these challenges. May those in detention centers be treated with dignity and respect. We trust in your promise from Psalm 34:17: “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.” May your presence be a source of comfort and courage for those facing an unknown future. Thank you, God. Amen.
In conclusion, immigrants in the United States are going through tremendous struggles, but God will comfort them and give them all they need through us, as we pray for them and treat them with kindness. Jesus encourages us to be compassionate to others when he says in Matthew 25:35: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.” Let’s continue to pray and act with love toward all of God’s children – including immigrants.
