As Christ Followers, prayer is one of the most powerful tools we have to make a difference in this world! Mark 11:24 says,
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
As we read about Jesus in the Gospels, we see over and over how he responds to our faith. When we are bold in belief, God is moved to action. Let’s boldly ask him to guide our nation's leaders as they greatly impact the direction of our country's future.
No matter your political beliefs, we all should care about the leadership of our country, as it impacts how we conduct our daily lives. Only God knows all things and is able to work them out for his plan and purposes. We have to trust him through every season, believing he can do good things and bring Heaven down with faith when we ask him to!
With that knowledge, we can all begin to pray for those the President appoints. Let our prayer be for God’s plan to move forward and no other. May God’s mercy be felt in our world as it struggles under the weight of sin and death. Let’s lift up these prayers of faith for the leaders around us so we can live quiet and peaceful lives for God’s glory.
Here are eight prayers for our American leaders:
1. A Prayer That God Would Be Sovereign
"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." - Romans 8:28
God,
We know that you hold all things in your hands. You hardened Pharaoh's heart, provided the offering for Abraham, and gave wisdom to Solomon as he requested. You work out the details of our lives for the good of those you have called into your family. We ask that, in the same way, your sovereign hand would be on our country. As those working in government carry out their tasks, would you be the one who truly guides their actions? Let our nation have every opportunity to know you, and would the leaders in our country find you and do their part to point our lost world to you? You are true hope and salvation.

2. A Prayer for Protection
"So we can confidently say, 'The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?'” - Hebrews 13:6
Father,
We come to you confidently because we know you offer us the help and protection we need. Would you protect those in leadership in our country? Keep them safe from harm, temptation, and evil. Place your hand over our nation and let your will be done here on Earth as it is in Heaven. Protect us from poor decision-making, careless errors, and evil plots. Cover our American leaders with grace and truth.

3. A Prayer for Wisdom and Strength
"But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere." - James 3:17
Father,
Would you provide the leaders in our nation wisdom from above? Our world is so full of knowledge, but what we need more than information is godly wisdom! Make your ways clear to everyone working in government. Bring peace, sincerity, and good fruits through their actions. Strengthen those who face opposition and temptation. Keep them pure in heart and action. Provide resolve to stay the course of righteousness when people and ideas rise up against them. Show them your ways and teach them your path.

4. A Prayer For God’s Will to be Done
"Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." - Matthew 6:10
God,
As decisions are made in our world, we ask that your will be done here as it is in heaven. By grace, would you bring into place policies, decisions, and actions that honor you? Bring conviction where there is evil. Bring change where there has been corruption. Bring clarity where there is confusion. Let your light shine through our leaders. For those who don’t know you, draw them close to you so they might follow your ways. For those who know you, guide and help them to be a part of bringing heaven down to earth.

5. A Prayer For Unity
"Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind." - 1 Peter 3:8
Lord,
We ask that those who know Christ in our government find ways to work with unity—showing love to all they are tasked to serve and represent. Let their humility pave the way for holy change in our world. Let their commitment to you be what bonds them, letting the goal of honoring you motivate them. Set aside prideful divisions so that positive momentum can advance in our government. Keep them tender-hearted, not jaded by the lines of division that mark our political system. Give them creative ways to build bridges and empathize with those around them.

6. A Prayer For Your Goodness and Mercy
"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever." - Psalm 23:6
Jesus,
We need you in our nation and your grace to cover all the policies and decisions made daily by those who work for the President! Let your goodness and mercy follow those who are in leadership. Would your mercy prevail in a world that is full of sin? We thank You for Your grace; let it cover our leaders and our nation. Use those in charge to bring good works and good news to our world! Would you be seen through our leaders?

7. A Prayer That Love Would Guide Them
"Let all that you do be done in love." - 1 Corinthians 16:14
Father,
I ask that those appointed by President Trump do everything they are assigned to do with love. Let humility and grace guide them. Help them to find ways to build bridges, show empathy, and offer a listening ear. Allow their policies to reflect balanced and careful thinking. Give them the ability to protect the vulnerable, show kindness, and put others first daily.

8. A Prayer Divine Opportunities
"Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert." - Isaiah 43:19
God,
You make paths in the wilderness! You are able to do abundantly more than we could ever think, ask, or imagine. Would you create new ways of doing things for those in leadership in our country? Open doors to creative solutions, to just programs, and to unique opportunities. Bring resolution to things that have been left stagnant. Show your ways to those in government. Lead them towards your narrow road. Go before our leaders, making a way for them.
