5 Emotions That Weigh You Down—and the Prayers to Lift You Up

Rachel Wojo

Negative emotions can easily burden our hearts and threaten to stomp out our prayer lives. Have you been there? Guessing you have! Taking them to God at the first trigger is critical.

2 Corinthians 10:5 reminds us, "We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ," empowering us to purposefully push back on the negativity that creeps into our lives.

Prayer and Scripture equip us to stand firm in spiritual warfare, just as Ephesians 6:10-18 describes the armor of God. Prayer is both a defensive and offensive weapon. Communication with our heavenly Father provides exactly what we need to deal with the negativity in a positive, God-honoring way.

A few weeks ago, I shared how to pray against anger, comparison, bitterness, envy, and pride. Let's explore how prayer can help us battle five more common negative emotions: anxiety, worry, fear, shame, and control.

1. Anxiety: Praying for Calm and Trust

Real-Life Scenario:
You've been thinking about the future and overwhelming feelings rush over your heart and mind.

Biblical Truths:
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." - Philippians 4:6
"Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you." - 1 Peter 5:7

Prayer Pattern:
Adoration: "Lord, You are worthy of my trust."
Confession: "I confess that I'm overwhelmed with anxiety right now."
Supplication: "Calm my anxious heart and bring me peace."
Thanksgiving: "Thank You for Your love and care."

Practical Steps:
Push back on anxiety by shifting a single thought of worry to a note of gratitude. Start a simple gratitude journal to write one thing you're thankful for each morning.

2. Depression: Praying for Hope and Strength

Real-Life Scenario:
You can't get out of bed on time because you feel hopeless as soon as your eyes open.

Biblical Truths:
"Why, my soul, are you downcast?... Put your hope in God." - Psalm 42:11
"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." - Psalm 34:18

Prayer Pattern:
Adoration: "Lord, You are my Creator."
Confession: "Father, I don't feel like I have hope."
Supplication: "Help me find strength and energy in what You did for me on the cross."
Thanksgiving: "Thank You that my heart is beating and You have a purpose for me."

Practical Steps:
Post the verses above on your bathroom mirror to read each morning as you start the day. Keep your eyes peeled for small blessings.

Reflection Question:
What is one thing God has done for you that ushers in fresh hope?

3. Worry: Praying for God's Perspective

Real-Life Scenario:
"What if" begins with a single thought and snowballs into a circuit of negativity, something like "What if the car doesn't start, then I'm late for work, then what if I get fired? Where will I live?"

Biblical Truths:
"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself." -  Matthew 6:34
"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you." - Isaiah 26:3

Prayer Pattern:
Adoration: "Lord, You are Savior and Sovereign Lord."
Confession: "I confess that worry prevents me from serving You well."
Supplication: "Transform my worry into worship through Your promises."
Thanksgiving: "Thank You for still having the whole world in your hands."

Practical Steps:
Write a prayer of surrendering your circumstances to God. Memorize a verse from the section above and repeat it during moments of worry.

4. Shame: Praying for Forgiveness and Renewal

Real-Life Scenario:
You identify a current relationship issue and carry guilt for past mistakes that feel unforgivable.

Biblical Truths:
"Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." - Romans 8:1
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins." - 1 John 1:9

Prayer Pattern:
Adoration: "Lord, You paid the price for my sin on the cross."
Confession: "I recognize that shame is not mine to bear."
Supplication: "Fill my heart with the same forgiveness with which You've forgiven me."
Thanksgiving: "Thank You for Your faithfulness."

Practical Steps:
Write a list of the thoughts that make you feel shame from the past. Ask God for forgiveness and rip up the list!

Reflection Question:
How does God's great love show that He accepts you as His child?

5. Control: Praying for Surrender and Dependence

Real-Life Scenario:
You struggle to take charge with love instead of pride in your heart.

Biblical Truths:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding." - Proverbs 3:5
"Be still and know that I am God." - Psalm 46:10

Prayer Pattern:
Adoration: "Lord, You are large and in charge of the entire universe."
Confession: "I confess that pride makes me think I'm the one in control."
Supplication: "Help me to be humble and servant-minded."
Thanksgiving: "Thank You for being worthy of my trust."

Practical Steps:
Pray for opportunities to show meekness. Create a journal entry about how you’ve seen God's grace in your life.

Reflection Question:
How can focusing on God's power shift your perspective to one of reliance on Him?
