Prayers for Work: Workplace Motivation and Job Opportunity

Christianity.com Editorial Staff

In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty. ~ Proverbs 14:23

Psalm 90:17 says, the Lord our God has established the work of our hands. Scripture reminds us that the Lord has good plans for us-- plans that will prosper us and not harm us, plans that will give us a hope and a future. If you are seeking a job, do all that you can and leave the rest to God for He will provide what is best for you! Let us work with honest effort with praise to God who enables us in all things: Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men ~ Colossians 3:23

Help Us to Know Your Word and Do Our Work

Almighty and eternal God, we pray that you would uphold us through the right knowledge of your divine Word through your Holy Spirit. Grant us peace and health as we do the work of our callings with your blessing; through your dear Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for the Work Day

Father, thank you for all the ways you’ve blessed me, specifically with this job that pays my bills and puts food on my table. Thank you that ALL work has significance because work is good. Help me bring you glory today, through my actions, my words, through the good work I do to bring order to my little corner of the world. Help me view my work as a blessing and not a curse. Give me grace and strength for the hardest aspects of my job. In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.

Prayer for Finding a Job

Dear God, You know my needs. You know my desire for a job, for work I enjoy doing, for the next step in my career to present itself. I pray that you would guide me as I continue on this job hunting journey. May I focus first on your will for my life, putting your desires and your plan above my own wishes and wants. Open doors to new opportunities that you desire for me, and equip me with the skills, knowledge, and wisdom I need to take steps forward in this process. As I craft my resume, write cover letters, submit my applications, connect with new companies and potential employers, and go on interviews,  give me the words to speak, and the courage to share who I am and what I can do. Give me confidence that can only come from you, and give me humility too. I trust you, Lord-- my life is in your hands. Your will be done. Thank you for being near to me every step of the way and thank you for always providing for my every need. May this all be for your glory.

In your name, Amen.

Prayer for a God-Honoring Career

Father, I come before you thankful that you have made work a part of life and given me the opportunity to glorify you in my work. Thank you that I can work hard and go to bed tired each day. Thank you for the good days and the difficult ones, and for the gifts, you have given me to help this world be a better place through my work.

Establish the work of my hands by helping me to be productive, patient, focused, and insightful. Keep me from distractions and from technology hindering my work instead of helping it. May your Spirit lead me in my work and help me to be joyful, creative, and worshipful–constantly reminding me of your love and that you’re the reason I have breath in my lungs. Teach me to align my work, family, church life, and rest in a way that would maximize your glory and allow me to bear the most fruit for your kingdom. Amen.

Prayer of Encouragement for Work

Lord, thank you for the blessing of my business or ministry. I am grateful that you planted a seed in my heart and gave me the resources and opportunity to use my gifts to serve others.

Lord, please show me what you want me to do next with the gift of my work. Teach me to make wise decisions and keep my eyes focused on the path you set before me. Help me avoid temptations and distractions that lead me astray.

Lord, give me the courage and faith to follow your call – even when it means taking risks. Protect me from the doubts and fears that prevent me from fulfilling your purpose for me. Help me to trust in you and feel your never-ending love and presence. Amen.

A Prayer for Protection at Work

Lord God, I pray for Your physical and spiritual protection in the workplace, where our influence, our priorities, and our character are tested daily. Help us to remember that every foolish action reaps consequences, and every careless word carries weight among our coworkers. Others are watching, Lord, so set a watch before our mouths and guard the door of our lips. Protect us from those who try to sway our convictions or tempt us to compromise our standards in the name of success. Place an invisible banner over us that reminds us of Your protective love and that we belong to You.

Our work is important to You, so turn us away from slothfulness or misplaced priorities. When others aim criticism our way or when a misunderstanding arises, guard us against impatience or anger. Protect us from our own sinful nature and help us to always take the high road of love in dealing with dissatisfied customers or disgruntled colleagues. Thank You for Your promise never to leave us or abandon us, and that Your Spirit lives inside of us to give wisdom, understanding, and security against those who want to pull us away or harm us. You are Lord, and as our Employer, we look to You to preserve all benefits involved in that relationship. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
