8 Prayers for Graduation, from Psalm 101

My oldest son came home from the hospital yesterday!

Well, not really – it just feels like that to me as his mom. What I am trying to say is that time has flown, and now, we are preparing to send him into the next phase of life after he graduates high school next year.

With so many high school and college graduations just around the corner, here are eight prayers from Psalm 101 for your graduating student:

  1. Pray that they would live from and for God’s love and justice and that they would always praise God. (Psalm 101:1 – “I will sing of your love and justice, Lord. I will praise you with songs.”)
  2. Pray that they would live a blameless life – that God would help them, and that they would be young women and men of integrity, the same inside and outside of their home, dorm, apartment, etc. (Psalm 101:2- “I will be careful to live a blameless life—when will you come to help me? I will lead a life of integrity in my own home.”)
  3. Pray that they would refuse to look at or engage with anything vile and vulgar, corrupt or crooked. (Psalm 101:3- “I will refuse to look at anything vile or vulgar, I hate all who deal crookedly; I will have nothing to do with them.”)
  4. Pray that they would reject perverse ideas and stay away from evil. (Psalm 101:4 - “I will reject vile ideas and stay away from every evil.”)
  5. Pray that they would not tolerate people who speak ill of their neighbors or are arrogant or who treat others unjustly. (Psalm 101:5 - “I will not tolerate people who slander their neighbors. I will not endure conceit and pride.”)
  6. Pray that God would grant them faithful friends and companions- deep and real friendships with those who have integrity. (“Psalm 101:6 - “I will search for faithful people to be my companions. Only those who are above reproach.”)
  7. Pray that they would be truth-tellers and be surrounded by lovers of truth. (Psalm 101:7 - “I will not allow deceivers to serve in my house, and liars will not stay in my presence.”)
  8. Pray that they would become pursuers of justice, shalom, and righteousness in their campuses, cities, and communities. (Psalm 101:8, “My daily task will be to ferret out the wicked and free the city of the Lord from their grip.”)

I have prayed Psalm 101 over my sons since they were born – and am praying now as they prepare to launch into the world as young adults, trusting that God will lead and guide them as they step into their next.
