A good quote gives the reader pause because there’s substance to ponder and consider. The best quotes invite us to linger, to mine for treasure beneath the surface. Charles Spurgeon quotes do just that—they challenge, inspire, move us to action, and ultimately invite us into a closer relationship with Christ.
Charles Spurgeon was an English Baptist preacher who lived from 1834-1892. He began preaching the Word of God as a teenager in rural Cambridgeshire and was soon invited to London where he preached for the New Park Street Chapel. The congregation was so moved by the young preacher, they continued to invite him to stay. As his reputation grew, Spurgeon was invited to speak throughout London and around the nation.
Spurgeon had an impressive work ethic, preaching the Gospel message up to 13 times a week (over 600 times before he was 20). At his death, he had written myriad collections of commentaries, devotions, sayings, and illustrations and is the most read Christian author today (outside of the Holy Scriptures).
Most importantly, Charles Spurgeon preached the Cross of Christ—for he knew that the Crucifixion and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ are where mankind’s bondage to sin was broken, once for all, for all who believe.
If you long to ponder the deep things of our faith, spend time with this authentic and passionate man of God, and soak in these Charles Spurgeon quotes. Let his wisdom direct you to the Source of all wisdom—our Creator, Sustainer, and Hope.

“Prayer is the natural outgushing of a soul in communion with Jesus. Just as the leaf and the fruit will come out of the vine-branch without any conscious effort on the part of the branch, but simply because of its living union with the stem, so prayer buds, and blossoms, and fruits out of souls abiding in Jesus.”
“A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.”
“Visit many good books, but live in the Bible.”
“Nobody ever outgrows Scripture; the book widens and deepens with our years.”
“Half our fears arise from neglect of the Bible.”
“The Word of God will be to you a bulwark and a high tower, a castle of defense against the foe. Oh, see to it that the Word of God is in you, in your very soul, permeating your thoughts, and so operating upon your outward life, that all may know you to be a true Bible-Christian, for they perceive it in your words and deeds.”
“Every promise of Scripture is a writing of God, which may be pleaded before Him with this reasonable request, ‘Do as Thou hast said.' The Heavenly Father will not break His Word to His own child.”
“The word of God is always most precious to the man who most lives upon it.”
“The more you read the Bible; and the more you meditate on it, the more you will be astonished with it.”
"Defend the Bible? I would as soon defend a lion! Unchain it and it will defend itself."

And no faith is so precious as that which lives and triumphs through adversity. Tested faith brings experience. You would never have believed your own weakness had you not needed to pass through trials. And you would never have known God’s strength had His strength not been needed to carry you through.”
“The true Christian life, when we live near to God, is the rough draft of the life of full communion above.”
