There is a great debate in our Christian lives as to whether or not God is fair. We sometimes think God is unfair because of all the bad experiences we go through. And then, when we experience good things, we conclude that God must be fair. But is this really how we weigh the fairness or unfairness of our Creator?
Is God fair? Let us dive deep into the Word to really discuss whether or not God is fair.
God is beyond our understanding. No one, not even the most intelligent person on earth can really grasp what God desires and what God’s plans are. Imagine this scenario: Who would have thought, during the time of the Roman Empire, that God would bring forth His only begotten son to revive the world against sin? If this was a movie in the theaters, everyone would have been shocked about the twist — God, our Creator, sending His Son to die to save us.
Our Definition of ‘Fair’ Is in the Wrong Place
Now, is God fair? This is a tricky question because we think the term fair means equality. Yet, if God is truly fair, then, He would let us all spend eternity in hell paying for our sins, because that is what we all deserve. As it is written, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” (Romans 3:23).
If God is fair in the definition of equally getting what we deserve, then we will be thrown to the Lake of Fire, as it is written, “Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:14-15).
But God loves us and instead of letting us pay for our sins, He brought His only Son to save us. Our definition of fairness or unfairness must be in the wrong place now.
One thing is certain, humans are unfair because we have never in the history of humanity, loved God as He has loved us. We always fall short in His eyes because we always have our human ways of defying Him.
We see war, oppression, pandemics, natural disasters, and we think it is God being unfair to us when it is really us who have brought these things upon ourselves. War is mankind’s desire to overpower each other. Pandemics happen because we continue to experiment on God’s creation. Natural disasters occur because we do not take care of the earth, which is God’s gift to us.
God Is Just
It is us who is unfair to God, while God remains to be fair to us? The term “fair” must be really different when we talk about God’s grace. It is synonymous with “just” instead, “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he” (Deuteronomy 32:4).
God is just and his plans are perfect He does no wrong because He is just, and He always has our best interest at heart.
We can read how God is perfect in the following Bible verses:
Now let the fear of the Lord be on you. Judge carefully, for with the Lord our God there is no injustice or partiality or bribery (2 Chronicles 19:7).
What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! (Romans 9:14).
God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you (2 Thessalonians 1:6).
These verses remind us that God loves us and gives us great comfort, but also stirs our emotions that we have truly been unfair to God because God is fair to all of us.
God Is Eminently Fair
God is so fair that He never shows favoritism. He treats all His creations the same. It is written in Acts 10:34–35, “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.”
Yet, despite God’s love, no one would believe in Him,
As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” “Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.” “The poison of vipers is on their lips.” Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” “Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes (Romans 3:10-18).
This is the reason why God draws Himself to us in order for us to believe in Him, and He did that through Christ Jesus. He brings a Savior — a true revolutionary to the sinful world and then saves us from our sins. When He saved us, He meant all of us, His creation.
God easily forgives. He does not treat anyone wrongly as long as we repent. It is written that “whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son” (John 3:18, 36).
We can take inspiration from God’s mercy in the life of Paul. Paul was a sinful man who was even tasked to kill followers of Christ. But God changed Paul and instead made him a true believer. He did this by showing mercy towards Paul and forgiving Paul’s sins.
Now, is God fair? Yes, He is fair, and no one can ever be equal to His fairness. He is gracious, loving, merciful, and fair in everything. He is God and we should love God as He loves us.
