How Should Christians Respond to Witches Being Mainstream and Cool?

Within mainstream society, witches have been promoted as “cool.” Television shows, films, and music have all portrayed witches to be “cool.” With this type of description being placed upon witches, it can cause many Christians to wonder how they should respond to this phenomenon.

A Christian’s Response to Witches

The Bible tells us that witchcraft is forbidden as it says,

“Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you” (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).

With this description from the Bible, we are given the information that witchcraft is prohibited by God, which means being a witch is also prohibited by God.

Mainstream culture has promoted the idea that witches are cool, such as through television shows and films, including Sabrina the Teenage Witch, The Vampire Diaries, and Hocus Pocus. I remember growing up and watching the television show Charmed, which was about sisters who were all witches.

Due to watching this television show, I grew up with the idea that witches were “cool” and even “kind.” Even though this show was first released in 2006, witches are still growing in popularity through different aspects of pop culture.

Newer shows, such as Kiernan Shipka’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, have also sparked newer interest within the modern generation for an interest in the occult.

Witches are part of Wicca. Despite the belief of many individuals, it is not safe for Christians to be a part of Wicca, nor should we have an interest in the occult. Wiccans teach that they only practice “white magic,” yet any “magic” would be a part of the dark arts.

God does not want us to be involved in any form of witchcraft, as shown in Deuteronomy 18:10-12. In addition to Deuteronomy 18:10-12, Leviticus 19:31 tells us, “Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.”

Many individuals will argue that teachings against witches and witchcraft are only found in the Old Testament, but teachings against witches and witchcraft are also found in the New Testament.

The Apostle Paul tells us, “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19-21).

As Paul tells us in this passage of the Bible, God warns us against practicing witchcraft alongside other sins such as rage, jealousy, and hatred.

This would tell us that witchcraft is a sin, which means it needs to be avoided at all costs. Thus, Wicca goes against the teachings we have received in the Bible.

Mainstream culture tries to cause us to drift away from God as best as it can. The Bible tells us Satan is the “god of this age,” as Paul says, “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4).

Since this is a truth from the Bible, we know that unbelievers are blinded by the truth of the gospel, which in turn can cause them to follow false beliefs, including Wicca.

The world is anti-God; therefore, it is not hard to believe that it tries to pull us away from God and the message of the gospel.

Why Are Witches Cool?

As Christians, we need to respond biblically to witches being seen as “cool” in mainstream society. From what the Bible tells us, we can know that witches are not biblical and that witchcraft goes directly against God’s Word. As followers of Christ, we should not endorse the idea that witches are “cool.”

Witches are part of the occult, which Christians should not accept. The world tries to tell us many things that are cool that aren’t, such as living together before marriage, drugs, and drunkenness, but the Bible tells us otherwise on many occasions.

Simply because the world says witches are cool does not mean they are. As Christians, we need to be biblically based and follow God rather than the world.

Mainstream culture can be influential to us, but we need to remember that we need to be constantly changing more into the image of Christ rather than the image of the world.

Paul tells us directly, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing, and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).

Our minds need to be conformed to the teachings of the Bible, not according to the teachings of the world. As Paul tells us in Romans 12:2, we need to let God’s Word transform our hearts and minds. We cannot do this if we are allowing our minds to be influenced by the pop culture of the world.

God calls us to be in the world but not a part of it (John 17:11, 14–15). Instead of following the belief that witches are “cool,” we need to take our stand for the Lord. Since God tells us witchcraft is wrong, we should not promote it, endorse it, or accept it.

Rather, we need to speak up against it and help those who are trapped within the bonds of this cult. We can help those who are in the cult Wicca by praying for them, befriending them, and sharing the gospel with them.

While it can be scary and intimidating to share the gospel with Wiccans, it is needed. The only freedom from their bondage is Christ Himself (John 3:16-17). When one places faith in Christ, they are given forgiveness of their sins, eternal life, and redemption.

Those involved in the cult Wicca do not know true freedom because freedom is only found in Christ. Galatians 5:1 says, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

The shackles bound around the wrists of the lost can only be removed by Jesus. Witches are not cool even though the world gives us the false belief that they are through pop culture and media. Similar to many individuals, I once believed witches were interesting, yet I never found them to be “cool.”

Rather, I was interested, but I was deeply afraid of them. Witches should not be seen as “cool” because they are actually against the teachings of the Bible and can cause much harm to others. In other words, witchcraft is part of the occult, which means it is demonic.

Why Does This Matter?

As believers, we need to turn away from an interest in witches as it can lead us astray. Instead of becoming interested in witches or seeing them as “cool,” we need to take a biblical stance and turn away from the belief that witches are “cool.”

There is nothing cool about witchcraft, dark magic, or the occult. All of these practices go against God, who loves us and wants the best for us. Since God tells us to stay away from witchcraft, we can know it is not good, and it is definitely not “cool.”
