"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work." ~ 2 Timothy 3:16-17
"For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope." ~ Romans 15:4
What Is Scripture?
Essentially, the word scripture means "writing." In the Old Testament, it occurs in the King James Version only once, "the scripture of truth," in Daniel 10:21. In the New Testament, "scripture" denotes the definite collection of sacred books, regarded as given by the inspiration of God, which we usually call the Old Testament. It was God's purpose thus to perpetuate his revealed will. From time to time he raised up men to commit to writing in an infallible record the revelation he gave. The "Scripture," or collection of sacred writings, was thus enlarged from time to time as God saw necessary. We have now a completed "Scripture," consisting of the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible. (Excerpt from "Scripture" entry in Bible Dictionary)
Scriptures: Divine Revelation
Bible, from the Greek name Biblia, meaning "books," is the name which in the fifth century began to be given to the entire collection of sacred books, the "Library of Divine Revelation." The name Bible was adopted by Wickliffe and came gradually into use in our English language.
The Bible consists of sixty-six different books, composed by many different writers, in three different languages, under different circumstances; writers of almost every social rank, statesmen and peasants, kings, herdsmen, fishermen, priests, tax-gatherers, tentmakers; educated and uneducated, Jews and Gentiles; most of them unknown to each other, and writing at various periods during the space of about 1600 years: and yet, after all, it is only one book dealing with only one subject in its numberless aspects and relations, the subject of man's redemption. Scripture is also known as The Testaments or Covenants because it is the testimony of God to man, the truths to which God bears witness; and is also the covenant or agreement of God with mankind for his salvation. Holy Scripture is a gift of divine revelation that presents the life of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and redeemer of man, and God's law and will for mankind.
