Does 444 have a special meaning in the Bible? After all, it does appear that certain numbers have special meanings in the Bible. For instance, the number 12 signifies the number of tribes of Israel and the number of disciples Jesus called for his earthly ministry. We also know the number 6 as the devil’s number, the number of incompleteness, as the Mark of the Beast will contain the number 666.
So what about the number 444? If 666 and even 777 have a meaning, we may imagine that 44 surely does. Or does this fall under the category of angel numbers, the urban legend that angels are talking to people via numbers?
In this article, we’ll uncover whether or not 444 has a special biblical meaning.
Are there Bible Verses that Use 444 with a Special Meaning?
The short answer to this question is not really. Not unless we make the examples stretch.
The closest we can come to a Bible verse using 444 in a special way is in the following examples.
Jesus’ Baptism and Confirmation: According to Biblestudy.com, “The pattern of the number 444 is manifested as there are 44 months and 4 days between Jesus’ baptism and the day God the Father gave his final confirmation that Christ was the One chosen to die on Passover to make our salvation possible!” In essence, the argument here is that if we put 44 and 4 together, we get 444.
The BibleStudy.com article quickly points out other sets of 4 that seem to play a big role in Jesus’ ministry and the Bible.
The most notable example is the 40 days Jesus was tempted by the devil. We often commemorate that event through the practice of Lent. Some church traditions refrain from something—whether it be meat, social media, sugar, etc.—to recognize the period that Jesus went without food in the wilderness.
In addition, the Israelites wandered the desert for 40 years before they entered the Promised Land.
The Bible doesn’t have a shortage of meaning for 40. However, that does not necessarily mean that anything related to 4 or 40 has a special meaning. The argument used here really seems to be stretching as much as possible to find an explanation for 444. The only other important mention of 444 in the Bible comes from the time of Nehemiah.
444 BC: You may know Nehemiah by the book named after him in the Bible. Before the book’s events, the Israelites had been taken captive by Babylon and lived as exiles for 70 years. Eventually, they made their way back and started to rebuild.
During the time of Nehemiah (around 444 B.C.), they rebuilt the Temple and constructed a wall around the city’s perimeter to protect the Israelites from their enemies.
While it’s interesting that the Temple’s rebuilding happened at this time and that past historians believed that Christ came 444 years later, it’s a stretch to argue that these factors alone give 444 a special meaning.
For one thing, it’s been known for some time that the B.C./A.D. dating system is off by a handful of years. As Candice Lacey explains, this means that Jesus was probably born between what we consider 6 B.C. and 1 A.D. So, building an argument for 444’s special biblical meaning that hinges entirely on a calendar developed after biblical times runs into problems.
Other than these two instances, we don’t really see much meaning attributed to the number 444 in the Bible.
What Is the Meaning of the Number 4 in the Bible?
What about the number 4 itself? Does it seem to have any inherent meaning in the Bible?
Four, according to The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, represents completeness. We see several examples in the Bible where four things/elements exist together:
- Four rivers that flow near the Garden of Eden, which are paralleled by the four rivers in paradise mentioned in Revelation.
- The fourth commandment is to rest, to keep the Sabbath.
- Four beasts appear in the book of Daniel.
- Four living creatures in heaven declaring, “Holy, Holy, Holy,” without ceasing.
- Four horsemen of the Apocalypse.
- The four winds of heaven and the four corners of the earth typically refer to the entire earth.
Some of these examples do not necessarily equal holiness. The four beasts in the book of Daniel show an all-consuming period of conquest and destruction in the wake of terrible world leaders. We know them to be Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome—and then, later, the kingdom of the Antichrist.
All this to say, the number 4 definitely seems to have a deep meaning in Scripture.
The same applies to the number 40, as in the “40 days and 40 nights.” One could even argue that 400 has a deep meaning, the number of years between the Old and New Testament periods.
However, 444 doesn’t stand out in Scripture. We don’t see any prominent instances of it, and we don’t want to commit eisegesis by reading something into the text that doesn’t exist in the first place.
So, should we be cautious around the number 444?
Should We Be Wary of Any 444 Bible Meaning?
In short, no. There is something to be said that the Hebrew alphabet does tend to have corresponding numbers, and many people delight when they find patterns in such numbers.
With that said, when it comes to the practice of numerology—the study of numbers—we should be cautious. If we’re trying to find meaning in every single number we stumble across in the Bible and outside of the Bible, we can ultimately lose what God is trying to communicate with us.
God is the ultimate mathematician, and yes, he does use certain numbers with purpose throughout Scripture. The 7s and 40s aren’t thrown in there haphazardly.
But at the same time, if we’re truly trying to stretch our imaginations to try and find a meaning behind a more obscure number, we risk misinterpreting Scripture.
Not to mention, 444 can easily fall under the angel numbers category. Some people believe that when they see a string of numbers such as “111” and “444,” an angel is trying to communicate something with them. Nothing in Scripture points to the veracity of angel numbers.
What Can We Learn from 444 in the Bible?
Whether a 444 Bible meaning exists or not, we can still learn something from today’s article. Below, I’ve highlighted three potential takeaways we can glean from the number 444.
Certain numbers do have a special meaning in the Bible.
The number 4, for instance, has a special meaning. We’ve highlighted several instances where the number 4 shows the element of completion in the Bible. Furthermore, we see popular usage of the number 40 and 400. Especially in the Lenten season when this article was published, we see the importance of the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert—and how, through this practice, he nodded back to the Old Testament and the 40 years the Israelites spent in the wilderness.
Certain numbers do not have a special meaning in the Bible.
Although I cannot definitively say that 444 has no important meaning in the Bible, it doesn’t have any apparent meaning for us. We don’t see any instances where God communicates to his audience, “444 shows ultimate completeness, and here’s an example of 444 people all praising me. Or 444 cities all knowing me, etc.” We don’t see that anywhere.
We can’t get caught up in the numbers.
As a freelancer, I live in spreadsheets and crunch numbers all the time. However, numbers are interesting but not essential when it comes to biblical interpretation. They help us understand the Bible’s themes, but knowing any special number will not keep us from understanding the core Gospel message. So, responsible numerology matters but rests low on the order of importance. I think God would much rather us grasp his love for us on the cross than try to dissect what 444 and 222 means.
Although it’s sometimes fun to dive into the minutia to see God’s detailed handiwork, we must never forget the bigger picture. That Christ died for all sinners so that we could know him.
