Hymns do not get the attention that they so rightfully deserve. Sadly, many people and churches have moved away from or wholly abandoned hymns. Instead, many churches primarily sing and perform contemporary Christian music during the praise and worship portion of their service.
Contemporary Christian music is fine. There are many terrific tunes about Christ and His love, mercy, grace and faithfulness. Additionally, there are a ton of extremely talented people currently working in and producing great contemporary Christian music. But no matter how good a contemporary Christian song may be, there is no way that it will ever be as meaningful and impactful as “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” “In the Garden,” “How Great Thou Art” or “Amazing Grace.”
It's simply not possible to top the old beloved hymns. In a clip posted on YouTube, two women sing another hymn that will forever and always be cherished dearly by many: “Victory in Jesus.” Their duet rendition captures the meaning behind those memorable and iconic lyrics.
Likely, the big reason “Victory in Jesus” is such a timeless hymn that is near and dear to many hearts is that it describes a situation and place where every Christian has found themselves. No one deserves Christ’s love or forgiveness, yet those who have accepted Him as their personal Lord and Savior have it.
“Oh, victory in Jesus, my Savior forever
He sought me and bought me with His redeeming blood
He loved me ‘ere I knew Him, and all my love is due Him
He plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing flood”
Christ willingly went to the cross, suffering, dying and later resurrected, leaving the grave and winning victory over sin, death and hell. And because of Him, that’s a victory that we can share in as well.
Psalm 105:2 “Let your voice be sounding in songs and melody; let all your thoughts be of the wonder of his works.”
