Hollywood is typically not a place where faith and religion receive much attention. If they are prominently featured in something produced by Hollywood, it’s usually referred to and looked upon negatively and dismissively. Generally, characters who are religious and have faith in films and television shows are usually the butt of jokes or depicted in a controlling, abusive, or manipulative light.
However, Hollywood's outlook and perception of religion and faith appear to be changing ever so slightly. The last few years have brought about several notable faith-based films and television shows that performed well at the box office. Now, Amazon is getting into the faith-based entertainment business.
A trailer for Amazon’s new series “House of David” has been posted on YouTube. The series looks at the complicated and up-and-down life of the important Old Testament figure. The trailer opens with David preparing for, arguably, what he is best known for: slaying the Philistine giant Goliath.
The opening scene shows David preparing for battle against the legendary giant. David is collecting stones as a voice-over asks an all-important question. “Can one stone change the course of history?” the voice in the trailer asks.
The trailer also examines David’s modest beginnings as a shepherd, as he asks why his brothers can fight while he is stuck tending to the animals. Viewers also see David become Israel’s king, and later, there is what is likely a quick reference to David getting a married woman, Bathsheba, pregnant, which ultimately resulted in David committing murder. A woman states, “I have a child,” a second woman responds with shock and dismay.
The new series “House of David” starts streaming on Amazon Prime on Feb. 27.
1 Samuel 16:11: “Then Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Are all your children here?’ And he said, ‘There is still the youngest, and he is looking after the sheep.’ And Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Send and make him come here: for we will not take our seats till he is here.’”
