A Blueprint for a Life Built on Wisdom, Honor, and Truth - A Study on the Book of Proverbs, Part 4

WEEK FOUR: How has God been speaking to you through this Proverbs study so far? Are you gaining a lot of wisdom? As we read the chapters this week, we begin to see how much God values our relationships, noting the importance of how we speak to others and who we allow to influence our own lives. Whether it be the loving discipline we etch into the hearts of our children or fostering sweet friendships, God is at the forefront of it all.

Day 22: A Good Reputation is Paramount

Prayer

Gracious God,
As I come before this week, I ask that You continue to help me grow in my faith through the love letters brought before me in Your precious Word. I love you and am honored to spend this time with you.
Amen.

Read and Respond

Read Proverbs 22:1-29. There are a few well-known verses in this chapter (which will be in the Scripture memorization below), but this chapter also marks the beginning of thirty wise sayings that are to be heard and heeded. What are your initial thoughts when you read this chapter?

Reflect and React

So many wise words lead us to a life that yearns to give and receive discipline so that we may honor the Lord. The first half of this chapter lays out the importance of discipline and setting a foundation for our children. While there is no guarantee that our children will live a prosperous life, God uses this foundation to not only help our children (Luke 19:10) but to essentially grow us as parents. Leaning on Him throughout our parenting journey reminds us that He is the ultimate parent.

There is also a nod to the value of living wisely and how it can create a “good name” for those we encounter, being seen as trustworthy, humble, and kind. There are quite a few verses that reflect this. What stood out to you?

Memorizing Scripture is a great way of internalizing God’s Word, applying it to everyday life and conversations with our family (especially our children), and leaning into it when temptations or spiritual battles occur. Take note of some of the Scriptures below.

Scriptures to Memorize:

"A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold." -  Proverbs 22:1

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." - Proverbs 22:6 (ESV)

"The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender." - Proverbs 22:7

Day 23: The Consequences of Bad Influences

Pray, Read and Respond

Start with prayer and then read Proverbs 23:1-35. This chapter really focuses on those who influence us and how bad company can corrupt our lives with deception, lies, and “twisted truths” that entice us to sin. This whole chapter is a warning!

Reflect and React

There is an underlying theme being woven in this chapter on the mental and emotional manipulation of selfish and malicious people and how they can cause destruction to our lives. But there is also a warning for us not to withhold the truth from those who truly need it. Many verses glaringly start with, “Do not…” sending an obvious yet concerning message.

Some verses to reflect on include Proverbs 23:4, which brings forth great caution if we choose to chase after riches or trust our own cleverness. Proverbs 23:13 commands us not to withhold discipline from our children, as we will be able to rejoice when they go down the right path (Proverbs 23:15-16). Proverbs 23:17 tells us to not envy sinners. Proverbs 23:20-21 and 33-35 give a bold warning for surrounding ourselves by those who find pleasure in gluttony and drunkenness. The passage continues with vivid imagery of the consequences of being led into sinful situations and following the unwise.

So, who are you being influenced by? Are they speaking wisdom or swaying you to go against it?

Day 24: What is Your House Built On?

Pray, Read, and Respond

Pray with J.O.Y today as you thank Jesus for how He is moving in your life. Then, lift your heart up for others and pray for those in need. Finally, humbly seek His love and grace as you bring your personal concerns and grievances. (J- Jesus. O- Others. Y-Yourself)

Read Proverbs 24:1-34. The message continues with warnings not to envy the wicked or their ways and encourages us to build our homes upon the solid foundation of wisdom and knowledge. Did any verses stand out to you today?

Reflect and React

The last few chapters in Proverbs point out that we live in a broken world where temptations are everywhere and can cause anyone to stumble. It may have you wondering how to respond to certain “worldly situations” with both hope and love while also seeking justice and being gracefully diplomatic.

Proverbs 24:3-4 really stood out to me. This verse actually hangs in our kitchen wall, bringing a solemn reminder that our homes should be a safe refuge and place to recover when the world can be cruel and confusing. Is the temperament of your home one that eagerly embraces truth and welcomes all who enter with a gentle and compassionate love? This is really where we can make an impact.

Scripture to Memorize:

"By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures." - Proverbs 24:3-4

Day 25: Overcome Evil with Good

Begin with prayer. Read Proverbs 25:1-28.

Respond

In the very beginning of this chapter, we are told that these are continued proverbs of Solomon, but also compiled by men of Hezekiah, king of Judah. A king who reigned nearly 250 years after King Solomon. Many scholars believe that Hezekiah gathered some of his counselors to compile the Proverbs we read in Proverbs 25-27. Interestingly enough, while it takes a bit of a different tone, the message is still similar and very clear – “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter” (Proverbs 25:2). What did you notice when you first read this chapter?

Reflect and React

Some of the verses reflected here show how the New Testament authors often quoted the Old Testament. Read Proverbs 25:21. Then read Romans 12:19-21 and Matthew 5:44. The New Testament verses refer back to Proverbs in stating that we mustn’t be overcome with evil but rather overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21).

This reminds us that all of God’s Word is precious and should be something we want to saturate ourselves with daily. However, the end goal isn’t just to read the Bible but to apply it to our lives as we engage with God in the process.

Day 26: Foolishness, Laziness, and Conflict

Pray, Read, and Respond

Lift your heart up in earnest prayer, then read Proverbs 26:1-28. These verses center around three main issues that take place when we fail to live by God’s law and ignore His wisdom. Do you see them?

Reflect

The first section (Proverbs 26:1-12) paints us a picture of a fool who lacks common sense, and their actions lead to folly and destruction. They may be wise in their own eyes but oblivious when it comes to applying wisdom (Proverbs 26:12).

The middle section (Proverbs 26:13-16) illustrates the tragic undoing of a lazy person. The one who gives ridiculous excuses, with sloth-like behavior, and is unable to carry out their work due to a lack of desire to succeed.

The final part of this chapter (Proverbs 26:17-28) points out the problems when we interject in conflicts that are not our own. This can easily lead to making false accusations, entertaining gossip, and hurting others with words that can cut deep when conversations turn into heated debates.

React

Pondering on your own actions, are you falling into the ways of a fool or sluggard or adding fuel to the fire in a fiery conversation? Most of us are not immune to these types of actions and have either been tempted and baited into one of these sinful lifestyles or have been an innocent bystander, maybe even a victim of it. Is there an area in your life where you have been lazy, sloth-like, or quick-tempered? Search your heart and come clean before God, seeking help and a way to walk obediently in truth and wisdom.

Day 27: Godly Friendships

Prayer Prompt

As you come to God in prayer today, think about your current friendships and bring your heart before the Lord with those sweet relationships.

Read and Respond

Read Proverbs 27:1-27. There are many references here to the qualities of a good friend and how they listen thoughtfully, offer sound advice, extend good counsel, and ultimately draw us closer to the Lord. A good friend is not only to be trusted with much but should be cherished and treasured, as some friendships are more valuable than family and relatives.

Reflect and React

Proverbs 27:6, Proverbs 27:9, and Proverbs 27:17 are often attributed to the markings of a good friend. Are your friends the ones that bring attention to your foolish ways and faithfully bring you back to God’s wisdom (Proverbs 27:6)? Do they remind you who you are and etch truth into your heart (Proverbs 27:9)? Are you doing the same for your friends? (Proverbs 27:17)?

Day 28: Wise vs. Wicked Rulers

Pray and Read

Pray and read Proverbs 28:1-28. This chapter gives a vivid contrast between a wise leader and a corrupt ruler. It also delivers a grave image of how injustice, rebellion, and oppression lead to the wicked taking a stronghold. However, those who seek the Lord and lead with integrity and wisdom will prosper and prevail.

Respond

This chapter really hones in on the importance of good leadership. While it speaks to the stability and well-being of a nation, it causes us to be in a posture of prayer for our own leaders. We must ask God for His favor and hand of sovereignty as lawmakers and government officials are forming and shaping a country for either prosperity or destruction.

Reflect and React

Proverbs 28:15 says rulers that are not good, unlawful, wicked, and unjust will cause turmoil for the people. Proverbs 28:28 tells us that when the wicked rise to power, people hide, but when the wicked perish, people thrive.

Many countries have fallen into the trap of evil dictatorship and unjust rule, often due to a corrupt government being swayed by personal gain rather than giving the rights to the people, allowing them to prosper. This has been taking place since King Saul of Israel ruled in the 11th century B.C. Since that time, the Bible has described many good, bad, and even evil kings that have shaped our leadership history.

This chapter brings to light that the lack of faith, moral decency, and goodness can quickly lead to corruption, but virtuous leaders can promote wealth and prosperity. The words we find here also call us to action! We mustn’t idly sit by and do nothing but rather do our part by getting to know the character and nature of those running for office, vote with discernment, and earnestly pray for God to protect our nation.
