Some 64 percent of Americans believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, this according to the Real Clear Politics average of recent polling.
This shouldn’t surprise us, what with the economy trudging along, too many folks out of work, confusion over the new health care law, political gridlock, and on and on.
But there’s a deeper concern, a sense that something isn’t right, that we are witnessing a moral and ethical breakdown across the board.
In one sense, we’ve grown numb to political scandals: the sexual peccadilloes of our elected leaders, even misuse of power, say in the IRS targeting conservative political groups.
Scandals on Wall Street, well, that’s old news. One of the year’s most popular movies made a fortune depicting the despicable behavior of financial movers and shakers.
But who expected the level of ethical disarray that we’re seeing in what has traditionally been America’s most respected institution: the military? The Navy is embroiled in a bribery and fraud scandal involving high-ranking officers and millions of dollars. More than 90 Air Force missile launch officers have been suspended for cheating on their proficiency exams. And of course, Congress is trying to stem the unacceptable rate of sexual harassment and assaults in our armed forces.
It’s enough to make one think that at every level of society, we’ve lost our sense of right and wrong.
That’s certainly what Chuck Colson believed in the last few years of his life—and why he poured himself into creating, writing, and filming an amazing teaching DVD series called “Doing the Right Thing.”
Hosted by television journalist Brit Hume, Chuck and a panel of leading thinkers—including Princeton Professor Robert George—discuss not simply the breakdown of ethics in America, but how to rebuild our society’s ethical foundations in every area of life—education, politics, business, science, etc. And I was privileged to be a part of the launch. It’s amazing.
But what makes “Doing the Right Thing” so great is that it’s accessible to all, believers and non-believers alike.
Using natural law language and common sense, Chuck and the panel tackle the difficult but vital questions: Is there such a thing as right and wrong? Are there universal standards of behavior we can know? Can we reach a moral consensus? Most importantly, once we know what’s right and what isn’t, how can we do what’s right and encourage others to do the right thing as well?
And the series includes dramatic, real-life stories of people who, at times of real crises, chose to do the right thing.
