Our Safety and Security
Your Nightly Prayer for Dec. 30, 2024

TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE
“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of My hand” - John 10:28
SOMETHING TO PONDER
Many of us are familiar with the classic child’s prayer, “Now I lay me down to sleep; I pray thee Lord my soul to keep; for if I die before I wake, I pray thee Lord my soul to take.” As a child, these words can be somewhat frightening at the very thought that there is the possibility of not waking up in the morning. It’s not something most kids even consider in childhood. But as adults, knowing more of the realities of life, there is much comfort in these simple words that assure us that even while we’re sleeping, God is watching over us whether we wake up in this life or in heaven. As Christians, our souls are in safekeeping with God; we don’t have to worry or be concerned about waking up the next day because, either way, He has us covered. Psalm 139:5 describes how
“You hem me in behind and before, and You lay Your hand upon me.”
In a world that’s in chaos, it’s comforting to know we can sleep in safety and security, knowing that whatever comes our way, God is with us and is keeping guard over our lives. Psalm 4:8 explains,
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
No matter what kind of underground bunker or safe room one may have, none can guarantee or compare to the safety and security we have in God. Our lives aren’t up for grabs or at risk of being snatched away in the middle of the night from His love and care. Jesus guarantees us life, whether it’s here on earth in our human bodies or in eternity in our glorified bodies, because life comes through Him. He explained in John 10:10, whereas
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
As the Apostle Paul explained,
“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables Him to bring everything under His control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like His glorious body.” - Philippians 3:20-21
Although many people like to pass around the popular phrase that “Tomorrow is not promised to us,” as believers in Jesus Christ, it is, if not here, in eternity. As John 3:16 reassures,
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Dear Father,
Thank You for the safety and security You give us, whether we’re awake or sleeping in the stillness of the night. Because of You, we don’t have to fear the dark. As Your word explains to us in Psalm 139:12,
“Even the darkness will not be dark to You; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to You.”
Whether awake in the light or sleeping in the darkness, Your hand is over us, keeping us safe and securing us from the enemy’s grasp.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
1. Security and safety only come in this life and the life to come through Salvation in Jesus Christ.
2. Whether we’re out and about in the daylight or find ourselves in the darkness, our safety and security in this life are not dependent on what is going on around us. No matter the trouble that may surround us at times, God is looking out for us.
3. The enemy can’t take our lives away from God; he does not have the power to do so.
