A Prayer to Fight Sin Today
By Emma Danzey

“We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.” - Romans 6:6

Do you find yourself in a losing battle with sin in your life? Are you a Christ follower but seem to have experiences of defeat? We are told that we have victory in Jesus, and we are promised that we have the Holy Spirit within us when we accept Jesus as our Savior. However, this does not mean that we are not fighting a daily battle against our flesh and the enemy’s tactics. Romans 6:6 teaches us that our old sinful self was crucified with Jesus on the cross. Because of what He has done, we do not have to live in our sin.

We are made alive in freedom. We are no longer slaves to sin; we are freed children of God. This is easier to read than to live out. We all have areas of personal struggles, whether it be anxiety, addiction, gossip, lust, envy, pride, greed, etc. We all fall short. The truth is that we might be born with struggles that come more naturally to us. We are reminded in Ephesians 6 of the reality of spiritual warfare. The demons know our weak spots and strategically target those who are obedient and making a difference for Christ. If we can get spiritually aware and allow God to deliver us from our weaknesses and strongholds, we can live in greater victory.

We are promised that the old is gone, and the new has come in Christ. Many of us know this but really do not believe that we will experience true freedom until heaven. Although we might be like Paul and experience a “thorn in our flesh,” we also might live in freedom or at least by the Spirit’s strength as daily over-comers. Anything is possible with God.

Let's pray:

Dear Jesus,
We thank You today that our old self was crucified with You in order that our sin might be brought to nothing, so that we can no longer be enslaved to sin. We claim this promise over our lives today. We praise You for Your great gift of salvation to all who believe and receive it. Help us to live confidently in this truth. We confess the specific sins that we struggle with in cycles, those temptations that we are overcome by regularly. Please forgive us for believing we are too far gone or unable to live in freedom. Reveal to us Your Holy Spirit’s work in these areas. Give us the courage to get accountability from others. Help us to recognize our sin and confess it to be healed. Open our eyes to Your Word that helps us speak back to the enemy's lies.

We pray against the spiritual attacks and the fiery darts. Protect us with Your full armor. We have everything that we need in You. Thank You that we are no longer defined or held captive to our sins, but we are restored to You and set free. We love you so much. Thank You that You came to us knowing our mess and our decisions. You know our evil hearts. Forgive us for the thoughts and sinful desires that lead to sinful words or actions. We pray that You would lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. We pray that there would be barriers that we would put in place against the enemy.

We pray for brothers and sisters who we know are struggling with certain sins. We pray that You would hear our cries on their behalf and help them not to give up. Show them that You are still with them and that they can have victory. We ask for a mighty victory today that can only be credited to You, Jesus. No other name can save. No other name can do what You can do. We pray for abundant joy and lives that reflect Your glory and Your character. You are so glorious and we praise You that we are made new in You, redeemed forever. Amen.
