A Prayer to Be Immovable through Trials
By: Alisha Headley
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” - I Corinthians 15:58
We have all heard that saying, when it rains it pours. When one bad thing happens, it seems as if they keep happening one right after another. Sometimes we feel like we can’t catch our breath, because one bad thing, bad news, bad job loss, bad diagnosis, and bad event happen one right after the other.
It doesn’t seem fair. Sometimes, it seems as if God doesn’t see our faithfulness or hear our prayers. Sometimes, it seems as if all the work we are doing in trusting Him and fervently praying to Him is all done for nothing. Sometimes we pray for specific things in our life and the complete opposite thing occurs.
How are we to keep on trusting, believing, and fighting the good fight when one bad thing happens after another?
Today’s verse walks us through this type of season. Paul implores us to be steadfast - to be firm and unwavering. He then tells us to be immovable. Immovable is something that is rooted deep and secure and that which cannot be moved. Is your faith immovable?
Jesus himself teaches us this through a parable on this subject in Matthew 7:24-27, saying that we should build our house (our faith) on a rock (the Word of God): on a solid firm and immovable ground, rather than foolishly building our house on sand. For He says, “when the rain descends, and the floods come and the winds blow on the house, it will not fall for it is founded on a rock. But one who builds their house on sand, it will fall, and great will the fall be.”
What a beautiful parable on steadfast faith. Even if one bad thing happens after another, we can rest assured: our labor is not in vain. So, whatever it is you are going through today, wherever you are standing in this very moment, keep laboring. Keep believing. Keep praying, keep trusting. Keep abiding in the Lord, for we are promised that our labor is not in vain. Building our faith on solid ground, one brick and step at a time, will give us security. We will become immovable as we build our faith on the faithfulness of our God.
Let’s pray.
Dear Father,
Thank you that you have given us your Word, full of promises upon promises of your faithfulness. Thank you for the verses today, reminding us of where we should build our life.
Lord, one bad thing after another seems to be happening; we are tired. We are weary. Increase our faith, Lord. Help us believe. In moments of doubt, remind us of today’s Scripture. Embed it into the fabric of our hearts so that when trials come, we can rest assured in the immovable steadfast and solid foundation of your Word. Lord, help us rest assured that our time spent laboring is not done in vain.
We trust you, Lord. We trust your instructions and we ask for your guidance. Help us navigate what is being thrown at us every day. James 1:5 says that “if any of us lacks wisdom, to ask and you will generously give to us.” So, Lord, we ask that you give us the wisdom to navigate the fiery darts thrown at us. We ask that you give us encouragement today to face what is in front of us. Thank you for your unfailing love and sovereignty over our situations. Thank you that you hear us and see us, and that our trust in you isn’t for nothing. We love you and praise you.
In Jesus’s Name,
Amen
