Trusting God’s Love
By Andrea Chatelain
“But I trust in Your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for He has been good to me.” Psalm 13:5-6
How long, Jesus, how long?
We can grow weary waiting for our prayers to be answered. My husband and I wanted a baby more than anything, and I felt like I was being crushed in the process. Everytime I thought good news was coming, heartbreak followed. I couldn’t take much more. Then I prayed what I believe God was waiting to hear. “Help me, Lord. Take control and give me Your peace.”
Although the situation was different, the psalmist who wrote today’s passage was praying for the same thing—mercy.
In verses one through three, you can almost hear his voice breaking as he pleads with God. He wants an answer already! “Will You forget me forever?” he says. “How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me? Look on me and answer, Lord my God …”
The antidote to his anxiety is not in God’s answer, but His unfailing love. When we choose to trust Jesus’ love for us, that He sees and cares about every part of our trial, we turn our focus from our desperation to our salvation. That changes our tears into rejoicing.
I’ve longed for babies. I’ve endured with loved ones passing away. I’ve practiced patience in big decisions. I used to push through hard times with my will power. Now, I know waiting alone means sitting in fear, but as I pray to Jesus through the process, I am filled with peace knowing He is holding every part of my uncertainty in His grasp. And I can trust Him to work it out for my good.
