Recognizing Jesus
By Andrea Chatelain
“He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him.” John 1:10
Have you ever walked through a store and had a person approach you and start talking to you like they know you, but you can’t place them? Then ten minutes later you figure out who they were and do a face palm? I wonder if that’s how people felt as Jesus walked by. Perhaps their soul jumped a bit because its Creator was so near, but they couldn’t quite recognize Him. They were too focused on seeing with their earthly eyes.
I do this all the time. I pray for God to show up and then am completely surprised when He does. My mind wonders if that was really God or just coincidence.
When my first son was born he wasn’t breathing. He had aspirated meconium in the womb and was lifeless for ten solid minutes. My whole family was in the waiting room praying for a miracle as the doctors told them he probably wouldn’t survive.
But God stepped in where medicine couldn’t.
After receiving no oxygen for ten minutes, Luke should’ve been brain dead. Miraculously, he started breathing, crying, sucking on his pacifier, and drinking from a bottle. For the next five days in the NICU doctors and nurses from around the hospital came in to see “the miracle baby.”
From the world’s perspective, this was nothing more than fate or luck. But through eyes that recognize Jesus, Luke’s life is a miracle. We need to start training our spiritual eyes to see Jesus when the world tries to explain away heavenly moments with human reasoning. We need to let our souls jump when we feel Him in big and small moments throughout our days.
