Love Equals Obedience
By Andrea Chatelain
“If you love Me, keep My commands.” John 14:15
I like to call the shots, so words like “command” have never set well with me. Perhaps because they imply someone else is in control. It’s hard to surrender and obey someone else’s leadership unless you know it’s breathed out of love. For a long time, I wasn’t sure God’s rules were.
Then I started reading my Bible. And I got to know Jesus. I read stories of Him healing a woman who had bled for years, and outcast lepers so they could rejoin society. He had compassion on the poor and fed 5,000 people one afternoon. He saw people for who they were, forgave their worst deeds, and invited them into God’s family.
Jesus is the definition of love. Scripture has taught me everything He does begins and ends with exactly that. So His commands don’t scare me anymore. I don’t cringe at the idea of giving Him control because I trust He will lead me well.
Are there things hindereing your obedience? Do you trust God wants what’s best for you and believe His ways are rooted in love? When you do, you can hand Him control and rest in His peace.
