I am Loved
“When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved, He enabled her to conceive, but Rachel remained childless.” Genesis 29:31
During high school, I didn’t have an unusually great figure and wasn’t part of the “in” crowd. I used to watch soap operas in the afternoon and fantasize about what it would be like to be anyone but me. I imagine that’s what Leah felt like. Scripture says he sister Rachel was beautiful. Leah is described as having “weak” eyes. That didn’t mean she had poor sight; it meant she wasn’t visually pleasing.
Looks aren’t everything but in a society that sells love and happiness based on appearance, our confidence can become challenged. We may feel unimportant or unseen, but Scripture demonstrates this isn’t true.
God knew that Leah wasn’t loved by her husband Jacob, so He allowed her to have seven children. Unfortunately, that didn’t change Jacob’s heart toward her, but displays the Father love. God saw her and revealed His care in a tangible way. In response, Leah named her first son, Ruben, which sounds like the Hebrew word for “God has seen my misery.”
While writing this, I had an a-ha moment. Like I alluded at the beginning, I would have been considered one who had weak eyes, and this affected my self-esteem. God saw my misery and sent me a man nicknamed Ruben, to love me and redirect my life. What subtle thing has God done for you, maybe even over three decades ago, that you can now look at and say, God has seen my misery and I am loved?
