Called to Joy
By Andrea Chatelain

“You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound.Psalm 4:7

I’m often the bad guy in my house. The one who says no cookies before dinner, yes you need your coat, and no you can’t ride your bike to Mason’s house because that’s too far. My children don’t understand the boundaries I provide, so they respond with frustration, talk back in disobedience, or pout in silence. Ironically, that’s how I reacted to God for a long time.

God don’t You know that this is what I want? Why won’t You allow me to achieve my dreams? He seemed like another killjoy, another one trying to control my life. I used to think life was all about experiencing pleasure, excitement, and comfort. When things didn’t go my way, I questioned God or distanced myself from Him just like my kids do to me.

Then I experienced a season of pain and confusion. When I had nowhere else to run, I ran to Jesus. And I found peace and comfort in His constant companionship and love. It made me sad that I had lived so many years without Him because of my pride. I realized Jesus doesn’t want leadership to take away our joy, He wants us to surrender our plans so that we may experience the joy and freedom only He can give.

As I continue reading Scripture, praying, and trusting God’s will for each day, I feel more empowered and excited. Living with Jesus as my best friend means gaining unconditional love, unexplainable peace, and over-reaching grace. Through Him, I discovered a joy that remained unshakabe, despite my circumstances or problems.

What part of your life is God asking you to surrender to Him so you can truly live fully alive?
