Becoming Word-wise
By Dawn Tolbert
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1
When did you last stop to marvel at Jesus? Today, take a moment with me to pause and recognize Him as the immortal, eternal Christ through whom everything was created.
The Apostle John wanted the readers of his gospel to understand the deity of Christ. He wrote to clearly portray Jesus as the Son of God who has the power to give life to those who believe in Him.
In the opening words of his gospel, John, one of the disciples, purposefully echoed Genesis 1:1, which says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” In this, he focused us on that moment when everything began. Look and see Jesus in the inky black void that existed before creation.
John wanted us understand, without a doubt, the divinity of Christ, to realize that His power and His work existed from before time.
Genesis tells us God made everything—light and darkness, day and night, land and sea, all animals. He spoke, and the universe began to take shape. Creation happened through the Word, and that Word is Jesus.
Oh, sister, how we should marvel at the greatness and power of Jesus! We should be amazed at the great love for us He demonstrated when He came to earth as a baby, lived and grew, and gave His life as payment for our sin. The Resurrected Christ who gives salvation to those who believe offers to breathe life into our sin-ravaged lives.
As Christians, let’s thank Him for salvation and the life-change He brings.
If you don’t know Him, invite the Word of God into your heart today. Ask Him to be Lord of your life. He wants to make you new.
