Acquiring Wisdom

Some think that learning about God should be easy. But the Bible warns us that real wisdom and insight will require a great deal of effort on our part. While some prefer to call their innate impressions and their subjective feelings “wisdom,” the Bible says that real wisdom is gained through intensive study and an ardent pursuit of God. We are instructed by God to “call out for wisdom” and to “look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure” (Prov.2:3-4). God will grant it, but only to those who humbly and strenuously pursue it.

Wisdom doesn’t require superior intelligence, but it does require the work of “fearing the Lord” and a hard-earned “knowledge of God” (Prov.2:5). So if your spiritual growth has been on cruise control, it is time to “apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge” (Prov.23:12). It is time to pay less attention to your subjective impressions and more attention to the objective and propositional principles mined from God’s word. I pray that you rekindle a love for biblical learning.

May your mind be resolved to what is often an arduous hunt for an expanding knowledge of God. As Peter exhorted us may we “make every effort to add to our faith goodness, and to goodness, knowledge” (2Pt.1:5).
