Unshakable Faith in a Shaken World: God, Where are You When My World is Shaken? | Psalms 139:7-10 | Devotional
Psalm 139:7-10 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
In our daily staff prayer time, we prayed for Cindy who leaves this week on a medical mission’s trip. After 30 hours on a plane, she and six others will go into an area ravaged by natural disaster and governmental neglect. In mountain villages and makeshift camps housing victims of Hurricane Nargis, Cindy will administer medicines and the love of Christ. And wherever she goes, whatever devastation or danger surrounds her, Cindy will be walking in the presence of God.
In our passage today, David begins with two rhetorical questions that can only be answered with an emphatic “Nowhere!” Then he puts forth a figure of speech that states two extremes (up to the heavens…in the depths). The statement is meant to convey not only the extremes, but everything in between the “heavens” and the “depths.” All of space, David explains, is saturated with God’s presence. And take note. God’s presence is not passive. Wherever we are His hand will guide us. Whatever our situation, His hand of strength will hold us fast.
So wherever you are today, God is with you. Discouraged, depressed, devastated by life’s event? God is with you. Broken-body, broken-hearted, broken-spirit? God is with you. Moving too fast, moving too slow, on hold? God matches your pace. At a crossroad wondering which way to go? Let His hand guide you. Living with fear, dread, anxiety? Let His hand of peace hold you fast. Even if you want to run from God, there is no use trying. You will always run right into His presence.
Father, comfort us with the truth of your constant presence. Thank You for the truth that you will never leave or forsake us. In Jesus Name. Amen.
