Community: What is it? | Genesis 1:26 | Devotional
Genesis 1:26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
An amazing truth is found in our passage today—Man has the capacity to know God! We have been created in God’s image, which means that we share in the communicable attributes of God’s nature such as life, personality, truth, wisdom, love, holiness and justice. Because we are made God’s image, we can have spiritual fellowship with him.
But a problem occurred in Genesis 3. Sin marred the image of God in man. We are made in God’s image and share in his nature, but because of sin, man is imperfect and finite. In fact, sin made it impossible for us to have fellowship with God. Our sin separates us from the God who made us.
Man produced the problem; God provided the solution. His name is Jesus. The work of Jesus on the cross paid sin’s penalty that brought on the separation. Through Jesus, and only through Jesus, the spiritual fellowship between God and man is restored. In this present life there will always be the scars of the fall. But one day, complete and eternal fellowship will be restored and we will experience complete community with God.
Dear Father, thank you for making us in your image. Thank you for making spiritual fellowship with you possible. Thank you for Jesus who solved the separation brought on by sin. Thank you for our future complete community with you. In Jesus name. Amen.
