Ziklag: My Own Worst Counselor | 1 Kings 12:26 | Devotional
1 Kings 12:26 Jeroboam thought to himself, "The kingdom will now likely revert to the house of David."
Fear is a powerful emotion, and fearful self-counsel leads to disaster. That’s what happened to King Jeroboam. Fearful that he might lose his power if his people went to worship at the temple in Jerusalem, he built two golden calves and said, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.” He also built shrines “on high places and appointed priests” over them.
To make a long story short, self-counsel led the fearful king to establish his own religion and caused his people to turn from God. “This was the sin of the house of Jeroboam that led to its downfall and to its destruction from the face of the earth” (1 Kings 12:34)
You may be a good counselor for others. I pray you are. But self-counsel most often leads you down the path you want to take, unaware of the disaster that waits at the end. “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure” (Proverbs 11:14).
Lord, open our eyes and our hearts to understand the need for many advisers. Don’t let prideful self-counsel lead to our downfall. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
