But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.
If you want to be like Jesus, take care of your mother!
Jesus was in enormous physical pain. He was fighting for every breath. As He struggled to breathe, His raw back was rubbing up and down on the rough-hewn wood of the cross. Somehow in all of that He recognised His mother standing below Him in the crowd, and His dear friend and disciple John standing near her. He thought of what her life would be like now and how much she would need to be cared for and supported. So He asked John to care for her as if she were his own mother. And that is just what John did from that time on.
As you think of your mother’s situation, is God challenging you to take action to make sure she is taken care of in some way? Remember all that she has given of herself for you. Or do you know of another’s mother who needs some loving care?
