Isaiah 57:15

“For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: ‘I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.’”

Prayer that God pays attention to begins with an attitude of dependence and humility!

The foundation of effective prayer is not your words or requests or expressions of praise. Rather, the foundation of prayer is a right heart-attitude toward God.

Yes, we should be confident when we pray; but that confidence is based on the character and promises of God, not on our own person.

It is humility and brokenness that God is looking for in those who pray to him. He is “high and lifted up” but also so deeply compassionate that he pays attention to “the contrite and lowly spirit”.

Several times the Bible warns us that “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6). God is saying to you today that if you want to grow strong in your prayer life, put your self-confidence away; throw your pride aside and come to him with a sense of desperation and dependence.

Then watch as God responds to you, reveals himself to you, and acts on your behalf.
