“After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), ‘I thirst.’ A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ‘It is finished,’ and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”
It is finished!
Take a moment before you read the rest of this devotional and think about the meaning of those words Jesus said. It is finished.
The work Jesus was doing was paying for your sins. That work? It is finished!
Was his payment enough? It is finished!
Are you in danger of doing something bad enough that Jesus’ death did not pay for it? It is finished!
Did Jesus take all of God’s anger that was directed toward you? It is finished!
Is there still some religious activity you need to do to finish what Jesus started in purchasing your salvation? No—it is finished!
Should we still be giving our lives to the work of the Lord on this earth, honoring him in all that we do? Yes! But is that work done in order to earn our salvation? No. The work of salvation is finished. When you were united with Christ there was nothing else to do for salvation.
