Tuesday 1st December
“When he had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, ‘Lord, my servant is lying paralysed at home, suffering terribly.’ And he said to him, ‘I will come and heal him.’ But the centurion replied, ‘Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.’
“Lord, I am not worthy…but only say the word”. There is a strong connection between humility and faith!
You will not find a proud man who also has great faith. The two will not go together! A proud man trusts in himself, or in his bank account, or in his abilities, or his past success and achievements. A proud man rarely turns to God in dependence, because he does not feel dependent on God. He may find that he hardly ever even thinks about God, even if he goes to church on Sundays.
But a humble man knows how much he needs God. He knows that every good thing in his life is because of God, not himself. And so he is able to trust in God for the next thing as well.
