Colossians 1:15

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.”

Jesus is to have the place of honour and authority in all aspects of your life!

Back in the days when this verse was written, the firstborn son was esteemed as a very special person in the household. He received honour second only to the father, and came to have the place of authority in the home, under the leadership of the father.

So when this verse calls Jesus the firstborn of all creation, it is not saying that he was created first. Jesus is God the Son; he was never created, but has always existed with God the Father and the Holy Spirit. Rather, this verse is describing the position which Jesus occupies in all creation.

He is the one to be honoured above all others except God the Father. And he is the one with all authority. He said to the disciples at the end of his time with them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” (Matthew 28:18).

It is not our place to give him authority in our lives. He already has this position of authority. It is simply for us to acknowledge the authority Jesus already has in our lives.

What can you do today to give greater honour to the Lord Jesus Christ? What more can you do to submit to his authority in your life?
