“Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.”
You snooze, you lose!
It’s a basic principle of life, isn’t it? Laziness leads to loss. We all know how it goes. You have a massive deadline approaching; but the immensity of what has to be done is so overwhelming that you find yourself putting off starting on it. Then when the deadline comes due, you find that you cannot meet it; and so your business suffers or your grade suffers. You lose.
If one soccer team trains hard and the other doesn’t train at all, which is probably going to win? The one that trains of course! It’s so obvious.
Yet, when it comes to our spiritual lives, how often we ignore this principle. We fill our minds with our favourite TV shows; we read whatever comes our way; we rarely have a daily quiet time or memorise Scripture or take extended time for prayer. Then we wonder why we’re struggling. Tomorrow, set your alarm just ten minutes earlier to spend with God.
