What God Says about Your Body
January 22
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
Every now and then, I’ll hear parents around our church talking to their unruly children. The child has misbehaved somehow within the confines of the church building, and the mom or dad will say, “How can you act like that? Don’t you know you’re in God’s house?”
I have to say that every time I hear the church building referred to as “God’s house,” a little bit of a shudder goes up my spine. That’s because there’s nothing really special or magical about the bricks and sticks that make up a church building.
So what is God’s house? Where does God dwell? Well, in the Old Testament, the temple in Jerusalem was known as God’s house because in it was the Holy of Holies where the glory of God would dwell. Yet, at the death of Christ, the temple veil was torn (Matthew 27:51), which meant that God’s special presence was no longer a geographic location.
The house of God, according to today’s Scripture, is now our very bodies if we’re in Christ. That’s because at the moment of belief, the Spirit of God comes to dwell in our hearts and takes up residence in our lives.
The church building is not the house of God. The people of the church are the house of God. So when you feel tempted to sin, remember who lives in you and gives you the power to resist!
WHEN YOU’RE TEMPTED TO SIN, REMEMBER THAT GOD LIVES IN YOU AND GIVES YOU THE POWER TO OVERCOME.
