Learning to love by looking at the cross

January 13, 2011

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

John 13:34-35

Every now and then, someone comes to me and says, "Pastor, I just don't love my spouse anymore." So I tell them plainly "Well, learn to love! You say that the love of God is in you and that the Spirit of God is a part of you, then why can't you learn to love your spouse?"

The Scripture is clear that real love doesn't quit. That's the love of God!

In this age, it's easy to become hard-hearted. There's just so much hate and violence in the world and so many people who are loveless and unlovable. It can be easy just to throw up our hands, harden our hearts, and say, "I don't care."

But love does care. Love is not just an emotion that makes you feel good. It's something you do!

Now I want you to remember this above all: There is no real love without a cross. And while believers in Christ aren't saved by love alone, they are saved by grace, which is love in action!

So whether it's your spouse, a family member, a friend, or a coworker, learn to love. As a believer in Christ, the same life-giving power that resurrected Jesus from the dead lives inside of you and can work in you to show God's love!

LEARN TO LOVE BY LOOKING AT THE CROSS AND ALLOWING THE SPIRIT OF GOD TO WORK IN YOU.
