You Will Work in Heaven
By David Chadwick
People regularly ask me, “What will I do in heaven? Just float around on a cloud and play a harp? Won’t the routine become terribly boring?”
Yes, that routine would become terribly boring.
But heaven will be much more interesting than you can ever imagine. Not only will you explore the expanses of the new heaven and the new earth (Revelation 21:1), but you will also have time to get to know all the great saints who ever lived. Your relationships with others will become deep and rich because there will be no time limits. You will study and learn much you never knew before.
And here’s another observation that is often missed when thinking about heaven: You will work there.
In the parable of the minas, Jesus promised faithful workers that they would rule over five and ten cities (Luke 19:12-27). Evidently oversight will be an important work in heaven.
Jesus said, “My Father is always at work, to this very day” (John 5:17). If the Father in heaven is incessantly working, won’t every citizen in heaven be working as well?
No one knows exactly what work will be like in heaven. The parable of the minas implies it involves leadership. In God’s original creation, both manual and mental labor existed and were called “good” by God. Most likely that will be the case in the new creation as well.
But you can rest assured of this: Heavenly work will not be drudgery or boring. It will be satisfying and enriching. You will set goals, create, and accomplish. Every project you’re a part of will be enjoyed.
You will look forward to and be excited about arriving at work.
And here’s what is most important: God will receive all the glory.
Can it get any better than that?
