Work Is Good
by David Chadwick
When you awaken this morning and your feet touch the floor, your first words show whether or not you believe that work is good.
What did you say? Did you begin your day by groaning, “Good Lord, it’s morning.” Or did you sing with joy, “Good morning, Lord!” The first expression sees work as drudgery. The second one more likely views work as meaningful.
Which describes you?
God wants your work to be meaningful. Work was his idea. When he created the world, he worked. And at the end of creation, he sat back and declared, “It’s very good.” Not just good, but very good.
God wants us to do the same.
Why can you believe that work is good? Here are some reasons:
- It allows us to create with God. Of course, only God can create ex nihilo, from nothing to something. But God has given us humans resources so we can continue creating (trees to furniture, metals to cars, grass to fields, words to books, etc.). God applauds as we continue creating.
- Work prevents idleness. Laziness shrivels both body and soul. It’s a deadly sin. Work builds both body and soul – releasing endorphins inside us that make us feel great. Plus, work gives us the joy of accomplishment and allows us to say, “That’s very good!”
Work is a very good gift from a very good God.
When you realize this truth, it’ll make you arise in the morning not dreading work, but singing a joyous song that begins with the words, “Good morning, Lord! Thank you for the gift of work!”
It’s a song God loves to hear.
