Use Words Wisely
by David Chadwick
Words are important. They were God’s idea. They express ideas, feelings, and insights. Try having an intimate, meaningful human relationship without words. It’s impossible. Words can inflame. People have used words to slander others and cause enormous personal harm to them.
Words can also give life. When people encourage one another, new energy pulsates in the environment. Listeners feel like they can jump over any wall.
Life and death are indeed in the tongue (Proverbs 18:21).
Therefore, use words wisely in your marriage. Husband, honor your wife by saying things like:
- “I’m honored to be your husband.”
- “I love you more than words can ever describe.”
- “Thank you for all you do for me.”
- “I never want to take you for granted.”
- “I’m never leaving you---never!”
- “I got the better end of the deal.”
- “Thank you for saying yes.”
- “I am a better man because of you.”
- “I am praying for you.”
- “I’m sorry, please forgive me.”
Husband, say words like these repeatedly to your spouse. They will draw you closer together. And let this be your unceasing prayer that you passionately pursue: “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer” (Psalm 19:14 ESV).
