Unholy Fire
By David Chadwick

If God is perfect and holy, then no sinful human being can come into his presence and live. For example, imagine a healthy human body. It is operating as God intended. Then you eat something that is unhealthy.

What is your body’s natural reaction to unhealth entering its presence? It wants it eliminated, sometimes by forceful, violent vomiting or diarrhea. Let that image stick in your mind. Health hates unhealth.

Similarly, holiness hates unholiness. When God, who is perfectly holy, comes into contact with sin, he must reject it from his presence. It’s abhorrent to him.

That’s where the concept of hell comes from. People who are sinful cannot enter into God’s presence. They are cast away into a place called hell, originally created for the devil and his unholy angels (Matthew 25:41).

In Leviticus 10, Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, tried to enter into the presence of God with unholy fire on their censers. The chapter implies that they were drunk when they entered God’s presence. They entered their way, not God’s.

As a result, fire came down from heaven and consumed them.

God will not allow his holiness to be violated. We can only come into his presence his way.

That way is the cross of Calvary. Through Jesus’s death, our sins are forgiven. We become a holy people. We are accepted in God’s presence by receiving what Jesus has done for us by grace through faith.

How do you expect to enter into the presence of God?

As you answer this question, remember: Health hates unhealth. Holiness cannot be in the presence of unholiness.

God will not accept unholy fire.
