They Will Need a New Pastor

Dad pastored a church in the South during the civil rights movement. At that time, there were no African-American members.
One Sunday, a young African-American man asked to join the church. One of the most influential members objected. He threatened to leave the church and take his considerable assets with him.
Dad came home for lunch and shared this story with us. Our eyes widened. We asked him what happened next.
With a shrug, he said, “I told the elders that if they didn’t allow him to join, they would need to find another pastor.”
The African-American man eventually joined the church. The influential elder left the church. And Dad continued to pastor the church for another 15 years.
