The Breastplate of Righteousness

The heart of the matter is a matter of the heart. Everything important in life flows from the wellspring of the heart (Proverbs 4:23).
That’s why you must guard your heart. It’s the devil’s focus of attack. When he discourages your heart, you are defeated.
What’s the best way to guard your heart?
Put on the breastplate of righteousness (Ephesians 6:14).
Please note that it’s called the breastplate of righteousness – it protects the heart. The enemy loves to attack your heart, which includes your sense of self-worth. He reminds you of past failures, that you are worthless, and you don’t deserve God’s love. He whispers that you’re a scumbag and will always be one. And there’s no hope for escaping your pain-filled present.
All are lies! Jesus came to give you his righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). It’s called the great exchange. He took your sin upon himself – something he didn’t deserve; and gave you his righteousness – something you didn’t deserve.
Practically, that means that whenever God examines your heart, he sees the righteous life of Jesus. He sees Christ’s holiness. Your sin is gone. His forgiveness reigns.
Therefore, when you hear the enemy’s lies about how awful you are, you hold up your breastplate of righteousness. You want the devil to clearly see who you are in Christ now. The old has passed away. A new life has been given to you (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Say to the devil, “I am not who you say I am. You are lying. I am sincerely loved by God in Jesus. I have his righteousness. And that’s the truth!”
Feel the devil’s scowl. Watch his assaults diminish.
Experience the growth of your esteem in Jesus.
And live in total victory over all the enemy’s wiles.
