No One Has Ever Built a Statue to a Critic
By David Chadwick
I don’t enjoy being criticized. Admittedly, when criticized, I become too defensive and try to prove my critic wrong.
I asked my dad once how to overcome this fault. He responded, “Always remember, son, that no one has ever built a statue to a critic.”
Think about all the statues erected around the globe. They are most often constructed to remember the heroic actions of an outstanding individual.
But have you ever seen a statue built for a critic?
Neither have I.
Jesus was criticized, reviled, and slandered. Yet he refused to respond in kind (1 Peter 2:23). He rose above his critics. He chose to love when hated, to forgive when wrongly treated.
Critics soon fade away. The legacy of a hero continues for years.
That’s why no one ever erects a statue for a critic.
