Jesus Is Your Boss
by David Chadwick
If you understand that work is a calling from God, you realize something else as well: Jesus is your boss. You are working for him, not man (Colossians 3:23). He is the one to whom you are ultimately accountable.
Yes, you are to place yourself under the authority of your earthly boss. You are to obey him or her with respect and honor (Ephesians 6:5). Whether it’s an athletic team, the military, or the workplace, nothing works well unless there are clear lines of authority.
Are there any exceptions to not obeying your boss? Yes, there are. If your earthly boss requires you to do what Jesus forbids, or forbids you to do what Jesus requires, you are called to follow Jesus, not your earthly boss.
What consequences might you face if you obey Jesus rather than your earthly boss?
You may find that your strong stand for truth earns you favor in your boss’s eyes. He may even give you a raise or promotion.
Or, honestly, you may get fired (1 Peter 3:14). If so, you say to yourself, “Well, Jesus, I was faithful to your call to this workplace. My time here must have ended. You have a new vocation for me. I look forward to seeing where that call may lead me!”
Jesus is your boss. Obey him above all other authorities. Your call is to please him – no matter what the cost may be.
When you do, you may receive an earthly reward. If so, that’s great! If not, you’re still blessed for taking a stand for righteousness’ sake (Matthew 5:11).
And a much greater and richer reward awaits you in heaven.
And that’s much more important and valuable.
