Honor Collective Memories
by David Chadwick
There is a fascinating phenomenon in marriage called collective memories. These memories are the stealth superglue that makes two people one. They are the silent cement that intertwines two hearts forever.
The phenomenon of collective memories is one of the reasons divorce is so dreadful. Divorce not only kills a marriage, ripping apart oneness, but it destroys the couple’s collective memories as well. Never again are they able to look at each other and ask, “Do you remember when. . . ?” And smile as memories flood their minds.
Here is my advice to safeguard the beauty of collective memories: Practice the Five-Year Rule. What is it? It’s the belief, rooted in scientific data, that if a couple will just lock the door of their marriage from the outside, and then choose to work through their difficulties, five years later they will be exceedingly glad they did. When this is done, couples describe their marriages as happier than ever.
The couples who practiced the Five-Year Rule learned perseverance, forgiveness, and how to work through issues together. They grew in their love and respect for each other. They moved close to each other. They became one.
In addition, they safeguarded their collective memories that now can be shared and passed on to kids, grandkids, and future generations.
Try it! Believe me, it’s worth doing.
