Condemnation
By David Chadwick
Guilt and shame can cause a lot of damage. They can form a toxic landfill in a person’s soul. Left unattended, they can poison every part of life.
Guilt and shame are different emotions. Guilt says, “I made a mistake.” Shame states, “I am a mistake.”
Jesus came to solve the problems of guilt and shame. His cross offers forgiveness for both.
For what we have done wrong, Jesus declares, “I forgive you.” For those who have become someone who is contrary to God’s will, Jesus shouts, “I forgive you.” He took all your guilt and shame upon himself and has given you his righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). You are now a new person in Jesus. The old has passed away. The new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17).
But the enemy does not want you to live in victory. He uses a powerful weapon to keep you bound to the chains of guilt and shame.
What insidious tool does the devil use?
Condemnation. He reminds you continually of all you’ve done wrong. He tries to convince you that you are what you’ve done.
The enemy is the accuser of Christians (Revelation 12:10). If he can keep you paralyzed in guilt and shame, he knows your energy to serve Jesus will be sapped.
Therefore, when the enemy does this, remind him of these three truths:
- Jesus did not come to condemn the world, but to save it (John 3:17). You are loved deeply by him.
- There is no condemnation for those who love Jesus (Romans 8:1). If you sense any condemnation, it’s not from Jesus.
- The next time the enemy reminds you of your past, you remind him of his future– hell itself (Matthew 25:41). That should silence his taunts!
Recognize the enemy’s weapon of condemnation. Don’t allow him to reintroduce guilt and shame into your life.
You are not a mistake. You are worthy of God’s love.
That’s the truth.
Now live freely from the toxic poison of guilt and shame.
