Beware When You’re Tired and Hungry - Moments of Hope Devotional - October 5, 2019

Beware When You’re Tired and Hungry
By David Chadwick

There is a warning given to people when they go to the grocery store: Don’t go when you are hungry. You’ll buy more food than you need.

I would imagine that you can relate to this warning.

Here is another one: Beware when you’re tired and hungry. Your spiritual enemy is on the prowl, and you’re especially vulnerable to him when you are in this state.

Jesus knew this reality. After his exhilarating moment of baptism, he knew his earthly ministry had been inaugurated. He had heard the Father say, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased” (Mark 1:11 ESV).

Then you read that the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness to meet the devil (Matthew 4:1). There, the devil assaulted Jesus relentlessly with temptations.

The first one was to turn bread into stone. Jesus had been fasting for 40 days and nights. He was extremely tired and hungry.

Satan’s temptation was for Jesus to use the lusts of his body for his own selfish purposes. But Jesus knew the enemy’s tactics. He was very aware that lust can’t wait to get, but love can’t wait to give. Lust destroys. Love gives life.

And Jesus was the Lord of love.

Jesus then quoted from Deuteronomy 8:3. Humans can’t live solely by physical bread, but also survive by obeying God’s Word.

Round one to Jesus.

Note when the devil assaulted Jesus. It was when he was tired and hungry. He was especially vulnerable in this condition.

So are you.

Therefore, stay rested, eat well, and be fully hydrated. Our bodies and spirits are inextricably connected. When one is weak, so is the other. Make sure you nurture both. Take care of your body and spirit.

When you do, the enemy is less likely to tempt you.
