How God Sees the Future

August 25

For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren Romans 8:29

God’s wisdom is supreme. Now, we human beings, His creation, can only “know” after the fact, but God knows before the fact. The word “foreknow” is from the Greek word proginosko, from which we get the word “prognosis.”

When your doctor gives you a prognosis, he’s giving you his best opinion, based upon medical science and his years of training and experience. But when God see the future, it’s not based upon His best educated guess. It’s a certainty, because God sees the future more clearly than we can see the present.

God’s foreknowledge can best be illustrated like the viewing of a parade.

If you watch a parade from the ground level, you see the floats as they come past you, one at a time. But suppose you could go up in the Goodyear blimp and look down upon the parade? Then you’d not only see the float directly in front, but quite possibly the first and last float too. You now have a different vantage point. This is God’s vantage point, and it spans the history of the universe.

We live in history. We see events as they come by one at a time. But God dwells in eternity. He sees the beginning, the end, and everything in between. And God knows everything. As you face the challenges ahead today, remember you have a Father who loves you and who knows what lies ahead. Trust Him for your present and your future.
