Today's Scripture
"He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength" Psalm 23:2-3 NLT

Thoughts for Today
Just as you need to plan quality time with your children, you need to plan time for yourself. If you work, have children to care for, and have no time for yourself, you might find it easy to slip into exhaustion and even self-pity.

In an emergency situation, airlines instruct parents traveling with young children to place the oxygen mask on themselves before putting a mask on their children. Likewise, single parents must learn to take care of their own needs, or they will not be able to care for their children effectively.

Consider this …
Today's scripture tells us that God provides rest, peace and strength. Ask him to help you plan wisely so that you can have some special time for yourself. He wants us to use wisdom and take care of ourselves.

Set aside a time period each day—even if it is very short—to relax and unwind. And find ways to spend time with other adults. Just as children need to play with other children, so adults need the company of other adults. Try to give yourself a special treat at least once or twice a month. This might take the form of a movie, a long walk, or a quiet dinner with adult friends. Finding these times of rest and peace will give you strength and you'll be able to be a more effective parent.

Prayer
Lord, teach me to walk in the rest and peace you promise. Help me to work out special times for myself, times of relaxation and refreshment. In Jesus' name …

These thoughts were drawn from … The Single Christian: Living as One in a World of Twos by Dr. Elizabeth Holland. In a world where everyone seems to have a mate, it is difficult to live life as a single person. Whether you have never been married, are divorced or are widowed, this study is for you. In The Single Christian, Dr. Holland examines many of the different facets of singleness, from rejection; bitterness and unforgiveness; loneliness; to dating; single parenting and the positives of being single. Note: This curriculum was written especially for small groups, and we encourage people to use it that way. However, it can also be used effectively as a personal study for individuals.
