Today's Scripture
“But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.” James 1:22-25 NLT
Thoughts for Today
You are getting dressed to go out to an important event—one where you want to make your best impression. So you look in a mirror. Hair okay? Tie straight? Makeup on right? Anything between your teeth?
If you see something that doesn’t look right, what do you do? You change it! You get it right.
That’s what you need to do when you are ready to face the truth about your life. Look at God’s mirror: his Word. The Bible. What does it reflect about you? And what are you going to do about it?
Consider this . . .
If you look in a physical mirror and see something wrong with the way you look, you probably won’t just walk away without fixing the problem. You won’t just glance at the mirror and then forget what you see. You will do what it shows you need to do.
James is saying we need to do the same thing with God’s Word. Read it. Listen to the words. Then remember those words and obey them! God will bless you.
Is God’s Word showing you something about your life that needs to change? You have a choice. You can close the Bible and go about your business, forgetting what it says. Or you can remember. And with God’s help, you can change.
Prayer
Father, your Word clearly shows me that I need to change this area of my life. I’ve been ignoring that truth too long. I’m ready to remember what your Word is showing me and make the changes I need to make. Please give me the wisdom and strength. In Jesus’ name . . .
These thoughts were drawn from …Completely Free! A Group Study of Romans 1-8 by Dan Strickland. Everyone struggles from time-to-time, but we can have confidence that in Christ we are completely free from sin's slavery, from condemnation, and from fear of failure. This group study of Romans 1-8 and 12 helps Christians break out of the dull routine of a stagnant spiritual life. Applying the truths found in Romans can transform any believer into a person eager to follow God's will. This study can also serve as a powerful evangelistic tool by explaining the message of salvation as presented in Romans. Suggested uses include home Bible studies, cell groups, Sunday school classes, support groups and personal enrichment.
